Jonathan gives talk to National Planning Inspectorate

In June, Jonathan Hendry was asked by the national planning inspectorate to give a talk on architecture and design to a group of planning inspectorates from varying counties across the UK. To facilitate their training on matters where design is the crux of any planning permission relating to the ‘Country House Clause’, held at the Dryden Enterprise Centre at Nottingham University. Jonathan provided perspective on 25 years of the development of the policy and what good design means when considering these applications.

Following the success of 11 approved permissions under the National Planning Policy Frameworks’ special provision for countryside homes, whether Paragraph 55, Paragraph 79, Paragraph 80 and Paragraph 84 homes, through to the latest version of the policy, HO11(1e), the requirements are complex, hinging on an exceptional, architect-designed home built in an isolated rural or Green Belt location.

The catch all term, the ‘Country House Clause’ has offered the practice the privilege of working with deeply caring clients, and Jonathan, along with the members of the practice, have developed a skillset unparalleled in this space.

As an example of one of these homes, you can see Kingsfield Pond and Clump Farm as shining examples of the results of this policy when done right. JHA acted a lead consultant for both projects, both overcoming multiple site and planning constraints, delivering to the clients a building of exceptional quality and durability.
