Founded in 2000 by Jonathan Hendry BA (Hons) DipArch PGCert ARB RIBA, Jonathan Hendry Architects has over 25 years of experience in the field.

Jonathan Hendry initially trained at University of Hull and completed his Diploma of Architecture at University of North London (CASS, now London Met). Jonathan is an RIBA Chartered Architect.

Practice

At Jonathan Hendry Architects, we believe that good architecture begins with understanding: the people who will use a building, the place in which it sits, and the purpose it is intended to serve. Every project starts with a close dialogue between architect and client, developing a shared understanding of the brief, the ambitions for the project and the opportunities it presents. This relationship continues throughout the design and delivery process, ensuring that decisions are carefully considered and that the finished building responds to the needs of those who inhabit it.

We believe architecture should be thoughtful, enduring and grounded in its context. Our approach brings together a sensitivity to place, an understanding of materials and construction, and a commitment to design quality. We seek solutions that are both imaginative and practical, balancing architectural ambition with the realities of budget, programme and construction. The aim is not simply to meet the requirements of a brief, but to discover the best possible response to it.

Our work spans residential, public, commercial and community architecture and the adaptation of existing places. Each commission brings its own circumstances and challenges and we approach it without a predetermination. Instead, we seek an individual response to the client, the site and the wider context, guided by a consistent commitment to thoughtful design, careful execution and lasting value.

Ultimately, we see architecture as a collaborative process of discovery: understanding what matters, questioning what is possible and making places that work well, feel right and endure. Our ambition is to create buildings that are not only carefully designed, but meaningful to the people who use them and the places they become part of.

Sustainability

We believe that sustainable architecture is fundamental to the future of the built environment. In response to the climate emergency, we see the responsible use of resources, the reduction of environmental impact and the creation of buildings that endure as essential considerations in the design process. Sustainability is not a separate ambition, but an integral part of making good architecture.

Our approach begins with understanding the particular qualities and potential of each project. We consider how buildings relate to their surroundings, how materials are used, and how design can respond to the changing needs of the people who inhabit and use them. Whether designing a bespoke family home, a public building or a community-led project, we seek opportunities to make efficient use of resources while creating places of lasting value.

We believe that thoughtful design can reconcile environmental responsibility with architectural quality, practical requirements and economic viability. Careful consideration of materials, energy performance, construction methods and long-term adaptability helps us develop solutions that are appropriate to their context and purpose. We are interested in how buildings can be designed to last, how existing resources can be made the most of, and how the built environment can evolve to meet future needs.
