Constrained Plot

Central London Location

Apartments & Basement

Introduction

The client commissioned JHA to undertake the design and construction of an underutilised corner plot facing multiple constraints within central London on Goswell Road. Surrounded by period properties, busy roads and minutes walk from Angel Station, the building responds to the brief, providing high specification apartments suitable for modern living, commercial space for ground floor occupation and a large basement.

Project

Set across four floors, with an additional large basement below ground, the building responds to an awkward site in its consideration of design and construction using a wedge, formed to maximise the use of the plot while providing interesting internal apartment layouts as well as a stepped, brass faced pavilion atop the structure.

Humanity in the Streets

London is a place where people never stop moving. With the amount of information a wanderer of the city perceives, the mind cannot comprehend the level of detail and complexity and instead blanks out the beauty it has to offer. To combat this, the building material palette remained simple and focus put into the street level, the tactility of the building as someone runs there hand along its wall. Stone, the finish of the window profiles, the facing brick and metal cladding panels all have a deep level of detail and craft applied. In the hope of a city which slows down, the building creates a piece of city fabric that on the external users level, which is haptic and observed through the seasons as it shift in colour, in tonality and feel.
