Small Project

Coastal Location

Deep Retrofit & Extension

Introduction

Jonathan Hendry Architects were approached by a client to transform a former and derelict public toilet block into a holiday getaway, at the end of a row of beach huts in Sandilands, Lincolnshire. Wanting something unique, the project offered the chance to reimagine the beach hut as is normal along the coastline location and utilise an existing, strong base, to add creativity to an otherwise stable form.

Project

Creativity of small spaces leads is the bedrock of architectural experimentation and creativity that leads to larger ideas. Being simple, being true to materiality and being able to make a small spaces work to the maximum potential, this project provides a small kitchen, bedroom and changing facilities. Made from translucent material in places, solid in others and wrapped in mechanical operability, the building transforms during its use, in line with the seasons and the users wants.
